Researchers of Laboratory for welding (LAVAR), FME-UL in cooperation with the researchers from Arts et Métiers ParisTech (ENSAM, CNRS), THALES Laser, Airbus and Institute of Metals and Technology presented an innovative methodology of material characterization in a high strain rate regime (order of 107s−1). For the first time, a way to differentiate between material behaviour in the cross-section and the in-plane welding direction of dissimilar FSWed Al alloy joint has been provided. In addition, methodology considers the link between welding direction, microstructurual and mechanical properties and Johnson-Cook parameters for precise prediction of material behaviour. The presented methodology is published in Materials & Design (IF: 9.417).
Obtained results and proposed methodology indicate high potential to predict behaviour of dynamically stressed parts, which can be used for both, i.e. isotropic and anisotropic metallic materials. At the same time the method can be used for optimization of LSP process; also in the case of dissimilar alloys and joints with distinctly oriented microstructure.
